Resilience

Resilience is defined as the "human capacity and ability to face, overcome, be strengthened by, and even be transformed by experiences of adversity."

Research has shown that some people can cope with trauma, while others are more susceptible to post-traumatic-stress-disorder following a traumatic experience. In a similar way some are more susceptible to stress.

Resilience is not a trait that some people have, or do not have; it is a combination of factors; behaviours and thoughts that can be developed. These factors include good relationships and a positive view of life.

In the current world political situation, some employees can be placed in a situation where they are more likely to be subject to a traumatic event or high levels of stress. As part of the selection process these people should be assessed to discover how well they can cope in these situations. They should also be given further training on how to cope with traumatic events.
